What is Iron Deficiency?
Iron deficiency is a condition that results when your body doesn’t have enough iron. Iron is a mineral that helps your body produce red blood cells. Red blood cells carry oxygen throughout your body.
If you don’t have enough iron, you can develop anemia. Anemia is a condition in which your red blood cells are small and not as efficient as they should be. You may also experience fatigue, shortness of breath, and a decrease in the number of white blood cells.
Iron deficiency is most common in women than in men. It can also occur during pregnancy, when you’re breastfeeding, or if you’re anemic due to other illnesses.
There are a few ways to increase your iron intake. You can eat foods that are high in iron, such as meat, poultry, fish, beans, peas, and nuts. You can also take supplements that contain iron.
If you think you may have iron deficiency, see your doctor. They can do a blood test to determine if you have the condition. If you have iron deficiency, your doctor may recommend additional supplements or treatment.
